Double-Decker Bus Tours Begin In Miami

Hop On, Hop Off Service Makes 20 Stops

MIAMI -- Visitors to South Florida have a new way to see the sights of Miami.

Gray Line Miami is offering Miami's first double-decker bus tour. Now, tourists who visit Miami each year can see the Magic City just like visitors do in jolly old England.

"We consider it a transportation service with the value added component of a city tour," said Julie Conway, vice president of Conway Tours. "You can sight-see and get a tan at the same time."

With hop-on, hop-off service and spectacular views from the open top deck, city officials think it will be a huge hit.

"It was fantastic -- very informative, very impressive," said passenger Roger Bartlett, who said it was his first time on a double-decker bus.

"The view from the second deck is unbelievable." "The tour guide was excellent," said passenger Lenor Ryan.

"He gave us a lot of information that I would never know to tell my visitors that are coming into Miami."

Passengers can ride all day for $49. The five buses make 20 stops through Miami and Miami Beach, and buses reach the stops about every 30 minutes.

With 12.5 million visitors to Miami each year, Gray Line officials said they needed to do something to stand out.

The double-deckers can carry about 2,500 passengers each day and take them to Miami, Miami Beach, Coral Gables and Coconut Grove.

"There are great cultural destinations, wonderful museums, the historical museum, the Museum of Art, Viscaya Museum and Gardens, and we have signature shopping -- absolutely fabulous shopping -- but the sights are just beautiful," Conway said.

Mike and Wendy Charles are from London, where double-deckers made a name for themselves. "Every country we visit, we go on these buses, hop on and hop off. We think they are fabulous," said Wendy Charles.

"It's great looking down on people as you are going by," Mike Charles said.

"It's great because you can see things much more clearly than you can on a conventional bus. I think it is a nicer experience."
